The $6,800 is only for the 5 speed manual, with zero options. The 5 speed automatic could cost $1,000+ more. Most people will buy an automatic, so that means they can cover a small loss on the base model.

Options will certainly be where most of their profit will be?

Costs can be best predicted by the weight of the vehicle. The Elio is targeting 1,250 pounds - so that is $5.44 / pound.

The Nissan Versa base price is $11,990 and it weighs 2,363, or $5.07 / pound. How does Nissan do it?
