Those were used in the old Triumph GT6's when they were first experimenting with independant rear suspension. They were an improvement over swing arms and U-joints but I think the rzeppa joints replaced them fairly quickly.

I'm going with Rzeppa joints for my setup - they're compact, long lasting, you can find a whole bunch of different varieties to match whatever power you want to transmit, and they're surprisingly cheap.
