A few reasons:
1. I can't leave the chains on the SUV, because they should not be used, or aren't allowed on main roads that have been plowed. (They damage the roads).
2. Putting the chains on and removing them when I get to the hilly area, is not easy and it's hard to find a safe place to park, during a large snow storm. Parking lots are likely to have deep snow blocking access.
3. I'm 70 years old, and don't like working outdoors during a winter storm.
4. I will not be using the AWD for any trips that do not require carrying large or heavy cargo. No Pizza runs.. (I like the Prius C for those trips).
(During the last 3 or 4 years, I put about 300-400 miles on the Ford per year).
So fuel use isn't a big deal for the SUV. I can't remember the last time I got a fill up..
