Just to follow up. Having had a few hx's now the egr system tends to clogue at around 220k-240k depending on the quality of fuel being used, and the amount of regular maintenance such as spark plug and oil changes.

I've spoken with the owner of the car that I started this thread with, and he has not had a single problem with it since I sold it over a year ago.

For reference here is a basic maintenance civic at 242k miles showing the extent of contamination.

This car only suffered from blocked intake passages, my black car suffered from a clogge all the way back up to the egr valve, on both the intake and exhaust side. What most likely caused that issue was only cleaning the intake openings, and gradually the system clogged itself again.
