Before I get to the most recent modification I'll give an update of what has been done so far.

Since the last post I changed the oil to Shell T6 0w40. Great for cold starts but it's thinner when hot too, in the 13-14 range where the 5w40 is in the 14-15 range. I have to add a few ounces of oil fairly frequently but I got the 0w40 on clearance for $5 per gallon so no complaints.

I've been using Diesel Kleen for over a month now and the engine sounds quieter. I seem to have been getting around 20 MPG (maybe less) with all things considered, however this is just judging by miles traveled and where the needle is as we still haven't filled the tank up all the way. I've been filling up at the same pump at $2.459 per gallon as it's the cheapest place nearby without sacrificing a lot of quality. There was another pump I went to that gave off DTCs but I haven't had any lately.

Today's update at 408,7xx: Removed the roof rack. Bolts were stripped so I cut through the plastic and the metal to get at them; even after I did though I couldn't get a lot of them out with vice grips, they're stuck tight and I had to hold the roof inserts with vice grips too and even then some of them wouldn't come out. Have to work on them some more. No data on possible MPG increase yet.
