Real or not it is a tool with the goal not to fix the problem but to control the masses. Worst case it's real, it will kill a bunch of people, reduce the world's population, and solve itself. Don't many of these same people constantly say the world's population is out of control anyway? Murphy's law also requires a extinction level asteroid to hit the planet 2 minutes after we solve all the problems.
