The new ones are actually all fairly good on fuel for their size and power, but you will get destroyed on maintenance. All BMWs have turbo Valvetronic engines, which are on paper the best engines you'll find from any manufacturer.

My parents leased an X5 40e hybrid and it gets ~27-28mpg indicated on the dash if you cruise at 65mph, which is incredible considering how tall and big it is. That same N20 engine in a 328i probably can get well over 40mpg while cruising.

Even before it gets old and needs expensive parts, the big oil sump and big tires will put a bigger dent in your wallet than a normal car just for routine maintenance.
