It's a gas tank that's a few gallons bigger thanks to a domed top. I can't remember if it was marked "VW do Brazil" or if it was some aftermarket company. Here's a link:

Nowadays, I can't remember why I wanted to convert to internal fill, or carry two extra gallons with me. I've only fallen short of reaching a gas station once in my life, and it's not like I used this car for long trips...
