Freebeard, are you referring to my set-up (the blue 'Yota) ?

If so, the tent is the smallest one offered by Tepui. It was designed to open sideways, using the ladder to support one side and some retractable bars for the other side.

Because our ladder rack has those side supports, we decided to have the tent open forward & backward. One side opens forward and rests on the front bar of the ladder rack for support. The other side opens to the rear & the ladder is mostly un-extended into the truck's bed.

I suppose it could be moved a bit more forward, but it should still rely on support from the ladder rack when it unfolds. There may be a way to make some short supports that could use the truck's cab...

This set-up allows us a lot of space for camping stuff, a few totes of biodiesel, & two big dogs in the bed of the truck.
