The Mazda was built in Japan and was a good little car, the Festiva was built by Kia in Korea and just wasn't.
Quite a few Mazdas were sold here as Fords, and the Ford versions were always a lot worse to drive IMO than the Mazdas. Mazda somehow manages to inject a bit of fun into all their cars, while Ford seemed to concentrate on making everything feel like it was made of wood. Steering, clutches, brakes, suspension tune and gearshifts all felt worse on the Fords, why the didn't just use the Japanese specs is beyond me.
