MPGuino is amazing for older cars and extremely accurate. So far it's been within 1% or less of being spot on with the fuel economy I've been calculating. It's very simple to tell when I'm in lean burn mode. Used with the vacuum gauge you can really squeeze the vehicle for a lot of mpg's.
