I've been waiting for someone else to post. Thanks! I like the Beetle because it is modular. the Body, floorpan, [front and rear subframes in Type III], and drivetrain are separable. For the floorpan, I favor Inrekor:

It's like Polymetal on steroids or something. Notice the A-arm front suspension and the rear trailing arms with coil springs. Compare to the stock upright shock and shock mounts. This would open up the interior space a lot.
