PC Magazine article on gas-saving techniques

OK, I'm a geek. I read PC Magazine. The September issue (which isn't even available online yet at pcmag.com), has an interesting article entitled "Save Gas the Geek Way".

It lists 8 ways to save gas,and mentions Ecomodder.com several times! Kudos guys!

Method 5): Track your gas use (using a SG). Word.

Method 6): Know your car's health. "Using a diagnostic device, such as a the CarMD, can tell you exactly what's wrong with your car - including what could be dragging down your gas mileage..." . What's this all about? Does this thing do more than the SG's scan mode?

Method 7): Replace your engine computer chip. "Replacing your car engine's main management chip can increase FE and boost performance." Huh? Are they talking about the ECU? They reference a site called LifeTips.com . Anybody ever look into this?

Method 8) Ecomod your car! "Ecomodding (or ecotuning) is a buzzword for modifying your car or driving style to get bleeding-edge FE. At Ecomodder.com you can learn about adding aerodynamic components (such as a sleek truck cap pr wheel skirts) and get tips for 'hypermiling'..."

Good press!
But, I'm curious about Methods 6 and 7. Any clues?

Thanks,
Eph
