I am quite conservative when it comes to the Kombi/Panel, and then I don't like extensive mods to its stock appearance. When it comes to driveline, even if one manages to fit 4WD on a T2, as long as the engine remains rear-mounted it's OK to me.
Just a random panel van that here in Brazil is still mentioned as a Kombi (I know it might sound quite odd, but it's Brazil anyways)
