I drove
one of those once. Aluminum body and a transverse rear seat. My mechanic at the time owned it and let me use it as a loaner. Then he sold it on without giving me a shot. It was copper with a red interior.
It had 30-odd thousand miles on it in the 1980s. It was the first time I'd driven a VW that didn't have sloppy shift linkage.
My weekly driver today, I drove as a loaner 10 years ago. It looks like I'm going to do a three-part process
- purchase rotors and drums
- get them cryogenically tempered
- do a brake job
The most patriotic displacement is 90.5x69 (=1776). Stock bore for good cooling, stroker crank for low end torque and 10% more displacement. I've got one on the bench, it was built for a panel van I've sold on and currently reserved for the '58 Baja.
I think this is the only way to do a stretch limo Beetle:

The rear doors are fronts turned around with an 11" stretch. There could be an additional stretch in the B-pillar, or it could be pillarless. Whoa, I've got a Beetle body for a donor! Maybe someday?
