It was meant to win a race in the desert, being roadworthy is already a stretch. It was never meant to go in production.

A production version of that car would weigh a ton, have only 3 square meter of lower efficiency solar cells and a battery with twice the capacity but 4 times the weight.
But it should be affordable.
The solar racer isn't. You can probably buy a couple of Teslas and a sizeable solar farm for that money. But then it was never meant to be for sale.

This isn't 'What if we try to make a cheap solar car?'
But a car like this may be possible in the future if high yield solar cells, lightweight high power batteries and carbon bodies etc. become cheap(er).
2011 Honda Insight + HID, LEDs, tiny PV panel, extra brake pad return springs, neutral wheel alignment, 44/42 PSI (air), PHEV light (inop), tightened wheel nut.
lifetime FE over 0.17 Gmeter or 0.1 Mmile.

Investors woes:
"In hindsight, I should have placed a bet on the horse that won the race"
"In hindsight, I should have bet more on that horse"
