Constant speed is best imho.
I used to put my Nissan in 4th gear and lift my foot off the pedal; it would maintain speed idling and I bet it did not use much fuel that way.
Same for my Insight when it is still cold; even though it has a CVT it will more or less maintain 20 mph idling, maybe with a slight touch of the pedal at times.
But every time I touch the accelerator I see the fuel per km go through the roof. Just idling works best.
