I also recently purchased a VW (1979). It shipped with 13s, it currently has 14s and I hope to get 15s down the road.
I priced Michelin Defender by phone at $132 and change per each. Then I drove to a local tire shop and got 2ea 80% tread-life 185/60-14 for $110. Including a half-rotation.
