Tread depth here is 1.6 mm. It must be a minimum of 1.6 mm over the complete width and entire circumference. Age doesn't matter unless you have an accident - then your insurance company can get funny.
There was a report on the news this week about a coach crash that killed an 18 year old boy. The tyre that blew and caused the crash was older than the lad. It led to a recommendation that coach tyres, fitted to a steering axle, are no older than 10 years. But it is only a recommendation!
