Sure, I'd have a spare tire if I was running retreads. Those things fail all the time, and the evidence is littered all over our highways.

That said, I watch for road debris and steer around it. Usually something that takes a chunk out of a tire is large enough to see.

I'll never need a spare. Even if the sidewall is damaged, the chances are good that it will happen within 50 miles of a friend or family. I'm speaking as someone who has used a spare on at least a dozen occasions, and maybe more like 2 dozen. I've even driven on a donut for months at a time.

The only time I would regret not having a spare is if I suffered sidewall damage up a long logging road in the winter with no cell service. At that level of improbability, I might as well carry around a small arsenal just in case the Russians invade.
