For my day job I did Manufacturing and Materials Engineering just before the turn of the century. It's largely mechanical engineering with some extra materials and manufacturing stuff, and without the fluid and thermodynamics parts of mech eng. Those missing bits would be useful when it comes to ecomodding though!
I like doing stuff with my hands - had a plant nursery for a while, and did a short stint in a cabinet making shop. My Forester has (designed and made by me) a custom engine bay guard, fuel tank guard, strut top spacers for lift - the type of things that make it better off road, but worsen the fuel economy. Back in Engineering now, but it is pretty practical - working with people, production systems and products in a manufacturing environment.
