Most geo metros are hitting that kind of mileage, if they haven't been written off first. They're getting old.

Metro transmissions aren't known for being particularly strong. When the clutch cable stretches, you end up killing your synchros. And, apparently, the 5th gear is known for getting stripped by those who do a lot of highway driving, from what I've heard.

Considering most people neglect these cars in general, the transmissions are decent enough for what they're meant to do. They're just not bulletproof/resistant to said neglect.
