I like your Pringles can idea though. Perhaps I should start by making my own antenna to get proof of feasibility with a faint signal, and spend real money only when it will improve results. I've got a coat-hanger TV antenna I built out of parts laying around, and it works pretty darn well. It needs a little beefing up to pull in signals in Silverton though.
