This seems to make the most sense.but would need electronics in there somehow...

As gas guage per miles can't even get it for slower gas carbs. the guage stays too dynamical...assumin warmer fuel in slower flows at the return changes density near guage...hence different readings all the time.
if you even get a return (there is a means to master very slow pump and have just bowl vent ...) My sube has had both return and just vent, return and vent.. Both difficult to measure actual mpg.

The simpler the better.
