I actually like the air-cooled VW engines, and many other air-cooled engines too, but in the last years I got to realize that liquid-cooling may not be so bad at all, despite the risk of groundwater contamination with the ethylene-glycol coolant fluids. Would be interesting to say the least if more automakers have resorted to that SACS system developed by Suzuki to use the lube oil as a coolant fluid. But anyway, since the main practical advantage of liquid-cooling is the ability to further lean the air/fuel ratio, maybe some supplemental water and alcohol injection could overcome that issue...
