Not sure about EVs, but 10 years ago I would never believe the Prius could outsell the VW Golf here in Brazil. But anyway, apart from the aerodynamic improvements and a broader availability of hybrids in many different vehicle classes, I'm sure the engine downsizing was one of the most noticeable measures. Just look at the Volvo XC90 which had engines ranging from a 2.5L straight-5 to 4.4L V8, and now the current generation is fitted only with 2.0L 4-cyls, quite impressive for a vehicle close in size to a Chevy Tahoe.
