I'd worry about dust less than if it were in a case on the floor.

Floors are the worst place for computers to live. Dust accumulation is much more rapid for computers that sit directly on the floor. On the desk, under the hutch as this picture shows should be a good place for it to hide.

My main concern would be noise since there is no case to dampen and direct the sound, and that wooden surround might channel noise towards the user.
