There are plenty of great deals on Craigslist if you look hard enough and use some common sense.
My biggest CL find to date: One of my kid's homes is a house I found in a CL ad (short sale), and they ended up buying it. Five years later they have gained close to 100K in equity in the house
I also use Craigslist for tools (paint sprayers, tillers, etc . . . ) that I won't use enough to warrant keeping but don't want to pay a lot to rent. I find a nice one in good used condition on CL, haggle it down to the lowest price I can get it for, use it for the project, clean it up and then re-sell it. Many items I make a profit on tools when I re-sell, so it's like I got paid to use the tool
