I also thought that, but on closer inspection around 3/4 of it is blocked with plastic trim - only the bottom two or so slats are actually open to allow cooling.
Definitely going to get a scan gauge at some point though, my car has an on board instant mpg display, but I do wonder how accurate they are. Still, better than guessing right?!
