Why do new powertrains have to be accompanied by ugly exterior design?

The Nissan Leaf was the first mass produced EV, and it was hideous.
BMW's first mass produced EV, the i3, is not a good looking vehicle.
This Clarity is clearly awful to look at.
Hey, the Honda Insight was a decent looking car.
