No - scientists did not think we were starting an ice age then. This is a myth based on a faked Time cover. There were two articles in regular magazines, and those misrepresented what was happening.
We had a lot of particulate pollution, and this was cooling things a bit, but we cleaned up our act a bit, and the warming resumed.
Clouds are a mixed bag, and we are refining this as we learn more.
Lowered albedo is now becoming clearer, and also melt water and moulins are being studied. Dark snow and water have much lower albedo than fresh snow.
