The rear of the eyewall of Maria fell apart at landfall and spared FtMeyers and points inland what would have been much worse flooding. And, hurricanes feed on the extreme low pressure in the eye and temp differential between the warm water and cooler high altitude. Adding heat and pressure part way up the eyewall would also tend to weaken the heat engine.

I think we should try it sometime on a hurricane that is remote from any landfall to see what would happen. What do we have to lose. About a 1/2 $trillion in damages if it works.
