I'm not ruling it out, the guy that came up with the idea has either a doctorate or PhD in geology.
I know the establishment likes very, very slow boring change over time with the occasional biblical flood or space rock as to how they like to explain things.
Use the status quo to explain most things, ignore anything that doesn't fit.
I think science should work the other way, put things in the comfort zone that belong in the comfort zone and focus more on the unexplained don't be scared of it. What's the worst that could happen, maybe learn something?
