Rational discussion rarely changes people's mind. Insults never do, but you showed them!
There was a post on a sister site that said the way to win an argument was to find common ground, agree with them where you can, and then point out the parts where they are absolutely, totally, and unequivocally wrong.
That probably requires skill, or at least practice.

I have practice in terms of politics. But helps if you're already friends with those people otherwise.
Some people will take offense over the mildest thing. After which finding common ground is very difficult.
And probably not worth your while.
