Convert it to hatch struts. Google the many conversion kits, they basically sit on the top of the fender lips. You could probably get a pre-built kit for a newer year and modify it to work. Trust me, you do NOT want to deal with pulling the whole hood to work on it, even if you get a carbon fiber hood.

You could probably even use the 2010 Prius hatch struts and mounts, but you'd probably need to get a second set to double up, the Prius hatches don't weigh that much (7 lbs on 2Gs for just the main aluminum frame).

OR...hinge it at the front, and also use hatch struts for lift support, and a hood prop rod for final position. Latch/pin it at the rear.
