You can go up to the max psi on the sidewall without worry, but it will stiffen the ride. That's up to you if you want a little better fuel efficiency or a comfy ride. Wayne Gerdes puts like 60+psi in his tires and they last twice as long as the tire mileage warranty, but that's just one example. Many people on this site go to crazy lengths to eek out an extra mpg or two and are willing to have a hay wagon ride to get it. It sounds like you just may want to hone in your hypermiling technique.
