Teoman: the ted talk seems to based on social conformity being the major force, regardless of logic. I have seen causation of this described by two overlapping theories.
1. People are more afraid of being a societal outcast than death.
2. People are busy and wait until an observable sample set have adopted some behavior without negative consequence, rather than trusting in their own information gathering.
