The dishwashers I've had grind food up and send it to the disposal. The only time I've seen it clogged is when my wife put the stem from grapes in there.

I'm not sure I like dishwashers because it's easy enough to just wash as you use them. That said, I have used them ever since living on my own; mostly because I was the dishwasher when I lived with my parents and wanted to be done with washing dishes.
