I am a fan of using bio-digesters instead of waste treatment as well. Couple the energy from that to cover with wind and pv solar as well should cover most energy needs. You would most likely still need some conventional generation to be running all of the time.

The cost of batteries is coming down significantly, before too much longer they will be cost effective to have for grid level storage to even out the generation from renewables.
