Dunno what they are really called, but they are plates added aft of the stern, along the underside of the hull, and extend the apparent length of the hull




Increase the fineness ratio: make it longer, or narrower
I just learned why warships have always had a squared off stern. The tapered would be more efficient but the square is faster and efficiency isn't as big of a concern. That square creates a high pressure area where the prop is giving it more bite and less cavitation. Therefore a little more top speed at the expense of less efficient.
