I find good deals on things through Slickdeals alerts, as well as Amazon (camelcamelcamel.com) alerts. I've bought the last 2 phones (Nexus 6p-$200 and Pixel XL-$289) used on Ebay though, and am very happy.

I'd get something with inductive charging built in so when the USB port fails, you'll still be able to charge. Newer phones should have USB C connectors which theoretically should hold up better.

The back market sounds like the place I should have shopped when I slipped my L5-S1 and lived on the floor for 2 months.
