Thanks for posting that. The only example I knew of was a b&w photo in Popular Mechanix Illustrated in the 1960s. I'd never found it again. It was a Porsche racer in the 1950s and had large boxes behind each rear wheel. Probably not popular because... no muffler.

I believe Beetle produce about 1500cfm of exhaust and 1500cfm of hot air. My design has a megaphone header with an upturn into a bell Coanda nozzle at the back of the boat tail:
