It surprises me that exposed gears would survive.

1 small rock. Looks like much damage .. perhaps the motor and gear mounting allows for movement if something is jammed into the gear teeth.

It does not appear that the gears have lubrication, or cooling, or much of anything. Certainly a minimalist design! I like KISS to a certain point, but this seems a bit extreme.
