I used to be fine with 5-6 hours. Since I got my son I need more like 7-8.
I would suggest taking a 15 minutes nap right after lunch, that might help you make it through the afternoon. No need to lay down. Just find a quite place where you can comfortably rest your head and close you eyes. I had a desk with my name on it in a corner of the library when I was in college.
