Not only affluent Asians do so. At least due to the status symbolism of SUVs and pick-ups, nowadays they seem to be more widespread than some sedans. Even though in Brazil we see more of the compact SUVs, they're also taking over due to the perception of an increased suitability to cope with harsh pavement conditions, despite their low-profile tyres and big rims not being so effective to bump the irregularities on the pavement so well as a taller-profile tyre in a smaller rim would.
