They stayed near the ocean because that's where their fields were. Before the mechanization most people were farmers. And most farmland is at low altitude, close to the sea.
Much of that will be gone. Obesity will be a thing of the past.

But the low-lying farmland, or what remains of it, is already in use. So they have no choice but to go further.
You can farm higher up, but it requires more work to prepare the land, rid it of trees and rocks, build terraces etc., depending on the terrain.
A Leaf with a trailer can be handy to help them.
