I get those temperatures, too, in central Saskatchewan, although they have been very rare this season. If we can, we plug in engine block heaters and some add battery warmers. I have one, but have not bothered with it on this car. Even without warming, modern cars start quite readily, but they wear a bit faster.
When I moved here, I tried that throwing of boiling water trick, and it does work. It would probably be a lot more fun with a super soaker.
