We pay about €3,500 yearly for a family of 4 (kids 11 and 9 years old), several add-ons included. Dental care only partly insured, own risk of €375 per parent yearly on prescriptions, none for kids.
My employer pays none of it. So it is insanely cheap compared to the US.
Then, if a doctor messes up nothing happens. If the damage cannot be corrected they may get a note, or a disciplinary hearing, but seldom a fine. Repeat offences do get acted upon though.
Suing doctors is a waste of time, as even if it gets awarded the payment seldom exceeds process costs.
Basically you have to trust your doctor to do a good job, know what the plan is, and if you don't like it walk away before the operation.
The downside is some people do get treated badly and no compensation.
The upside is that medicare stays affordable, as a doctor's liability insurance is cheap.
I do pay more tax, but I win most of that back here.
