Electrically Assisted Thermostat

I recently found out that one of the Peugeot models with a petrol engine have an ECU controlled thermostat. I had never heard of these, so I read up more on it, for example here:
The Electrically Assisted Thermostat

Anyone thought about DIYing one? Replace the stock t-stat with a hotter one, add an electrical heater on the input side and you can control it.

So why still use the wax t-stat instead of an electromechanical valve? Probably the reliability.
