Well the real issue is that many people believe their problems are due to circumstance, and not perspective.
There's a negative feedback look where perhaps society is harsh on those who are unusual, and then those people who are unusual develop antisocial behavior to cope with it, and even when the thing that made them unusual is changed to be the "norm", they still carry with them anti-social behavior and still don't quite fit well enough smoothly interact.
The ex-mayor of Silverton (Stew) is a heterosexual man that got breast implants and wears heels and skirts. It draws attention for sure, but I'm sure he was able to become mayor because his personality was normal (likable) enough for society to accept him. I saw him at the movie theater a couple months ago (he owns it), and he was wearing a mini skirt. Seemed friendly enough to me that I am motivated to reciprocate in kind.
